The square trap, and unit origins
Length intuition fails on areas because factors square: a metre is 3.28 feet but a square metre is 10.76 square feet, and doubling a room's side quadruples its floor. The hectare is the clean one — a 100 m square, exactly 10,000 m², 100 of them to the km². The acre began as a day's ox ploughing and settled at 4,046.86 m², about 40% of a hectare. The pyeong, 400/121 ≈ 3.3058 m², persists in Korean property talk despite metric law; two tatami mats is the physical intuition. Real-estate caution: quoted areas differ by what they include — supply versus exclusive area in Korea, lot versus floor area elsewhere — so match definitions before comparing numbers.
