How to Compress a Photo to Under 1 MB (Without Ruining It)

A photo straight from a modern phone is 3–8 MB. The form you're trying to submit says "maximum 1 MB". This exact collision — huge camera files versus small upload limits — is why "how to compress a photo" is one of the most-searched practical questions on the web. The good news: getting a photo under 1 MB almost never requires sacrificing visible quality.

What actually makes a photo file big

Two things control the file size of a photo:

1. Pixel dimensions. A 4000×3000 photo has 12 million pixels. A screen — even a large monitor — displays around 2 million. Most photos are stored far larger than they will ever be viewed. 2.
